The Biggest Lake in Colombia – Laguna de Tota

The last few weeks, Vic and I have been bouncin all over the middle of the country in hopes of seeing as much as possible before Vic had to head home 😦

We first stopped in Sogamoso to check out Laguna de Tota, which we had heard was the largest lake in Colombia as well as the highest.

To see Laguna de Tota, we first headed to Sogamoso - a town outside of the area. We stayed on a bautiful farm called Finca San Pedro where we could camp in the back for about $4 a day.

We took an hour or so bus to Aquitania to check out Laguna de Tota...before seeing the lake, we explored the endless fields of onions farms and sheep.

Here is a shot of Laguna de Tota. It essentially a huge crystal blue lake surrounded by fields of onion farms and mountainy plains.

We had head about an area called Playa Blanca from a local woman we had met that morning at breakfast. We decided to check it out and found that the name (White Beach) was pretty fitting!

Another day we took a 2 hour bus to see Salto de Candelas, a large waterfall in the area. It was only about an hour and a half hike in using sketchy bridges like this before we got there.

This thing was huge!

You can see Vic in the bottom of this shot to give you an idea of huge this thing was!

And when the sun hit the exploding mist at the bottom of the falls, it formed a rainbow.

On our last day in Sogamoso, we hit up the highest elevation vineyard in the world, Punta Larga.
